What is oCD?

OCD is characterized by obsessions and compulsions and can impact your thoughts, emotions, and daily routines, often in exhausting and confusing ways.

Understanding OCD:

  • Obsessions are unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, urges, or sensations that create anxiety, guilt, disgust, or uncertainty.
  • Compulsions are the behaviours or mental rituals we perform to reduce that distress or prevent something bad from happening.

While compulsions may provide temporary relief, they actually strengthen OCD over time, keeping you trapped in a cycle of fear, doubt, and reassurance seeking.

Other Related Disorders:

  • Body Dysmorphic Disorder
  • Body Focused Repetitive Behaviours
  • Illness Anxiety

Related disorders respond well to the same therapies and involve repetitive behaviours, distress, shame, and difficulty resisting urges.

Common OCD Themes

OCD can take on many themes and can present in a multitude of ways, but here are few common ways OCD can show up.

Fears of germs, illness, or chemicals that can result in washing, cleaning and avoiding.

Distressing thoughts about accidentally or intentionally harming yourself or someone else

Repeated questioning about reality, existence, or life’s meaning.

Feeling driven to repeat actions until something feels complete, balanced, or perfect.
