Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) Therapy in Calgary

Compassionate, Evidence-Based Therapy for Emotion Regulation, Relationships, and Lasting Change

Living with borderline personality disorder (BPD) can feel overwhelming. Intense emotions, fear of abandonment, relationship difficulties, impulsive behaviours, and a fluctuating sense of self can make everyday life exhausting. Many people with BPD have experienced significant trauma, invalidation, or painful life experiences that continue to shape how they see themselves and relate to others.
At Still Leaf Psychology, we provide compassionate, evidence-based therapy for adolescents and adults living with borderline personality disorder and traits of emotional dysregulation. Our approach is grounded in understanding—not judgment. We believe that your emotions make sense in the context of your experiences, and that meaningful change is possible with the right support.
Whether you’ve recently been diagnosed, suspect you may have BPD, or have struggled with intense emotions for years, we’re here to help you build a life that feels more stable, connected, and fulfilling.

What is BPD?

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) can affect the way a person experiences emotions, relationships, their sense of self, and stressful situations. Emotions may feel particularly intense or difficult to manage, and relationships or a sense of identity may sometimes feel uncertain or change quickly.

BPD develops from a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. For some people, experiences such as trauma, invalidation, difficult relationships, or other challenging life circumstances may be part of their story.

One way of understanding BPD is through five areas of dysregulation, described by psychologist Marsha Linehan, the founder of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT):

  • Emotional dysregulation: Emotions may feel especially intense, change quickly, or be difficult to manage once they arise.
  • Behavioural dysregulation: Strong emotions can sometimes lead to impulsive behaviours or actions that provide short-term relief but may create difficulties later.
  • Cognitive dysregulation: Intense distress can affect thoughts and perceptions, making it harder to think clearly or see situations from different perspectives.
  • Self-dysregulation: Your sense of who you are, what you want, or what matters to you may sometimes feel unclear or changeable.
  • Interpersonal dysregulation: Relationships may feel particularly intense, with strong sensitivity to rejection, conflict, or perceived abandonment.

With the right support and evidence-based therapy, people can learn skills to navigate intense emotions, strengthen relationships, develop a stronger sense of self, and build a life that feels meaningful and fulfilling.

Signs You May Be Struggling with BPD

You may benefit from therapy if you experience:

  • intense mood swings that feel difficult to manage
  • fear of abandonment or being left by others
  • Relationships that feel “all or nothing”
  • Chronic feelings of emptiness
  • Difficulty knowing who you are or what you want
  • Impulsive behaviours that you later regret
  • Self-harm and/or suicidal thoughts
  • Feeling disconnected from yourself, especially during stressful moments

Not everyone experiences BPD in the same way. Some people primarily direct emotions inward, while others experience more outward expressions of distress. Therapy is individualized to your unique experiences and goals.

WHat to expect in BPD therapy

At Still Leaf Psychology, we recognize that BPD is often rooted in experiences that have made it difficult to feel safe, understood, or emotionally supported. We work collaboratively to understand your experiences while focusing on the practical skills that can help you manage intense emotions, navigate relationships, reduce distress, and feel more in control of your life.

Treatment for BPD might Focus on:

  • Understanding your emotional experiences
  • Building healthy coping skills
  • Improving communication and strengthening relationships
  • Developing a sense of self
  • Reducing impulsive behaviours
  • Increasing self-compassion
  • Creating a life guided by your values

Our goal is to help you better understand your emotions, build effective coping skills, and create a life that feels more manageable, meaningful, and aligned with who you are.
